margolily murmurations

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

Margolily’s mind has been swirling around like a murmuration of starlings! A little pause and reflection at the beginning of the year, time for lists and milestones and ideas ahead. A post on Design Sponge in their biz ladies series got me thinking… ‘We may have to add, drop or alter projects as new realities emerge.’

Olive Feather Headpiece

My new reality has tiny Sadie at its centre. Maternity leave makes for a different kind of time zone and whilst I’ve made and designed a full range of tweedy tartan headpieces for Fabhatrix and a wee box of vintagey treasures for the Shop of Interest and been working on gorgeous nude, gold, teal and jet black bridal commissions…I think Margolily is thinking what do we add, drop or alter?

As well as new headpieces I’ve also been loving embroidering tiny leather Christmas decorations, knitting mindless scarves, cutting things up for prototype shower caps, turning the fabric I printed in the summer into little pincushions, making my gran a mad lavender button bag, using waterproof fabric elephant swirls for anything I can dream up and just generally having a fiddle and doing some new and old crafty bits and pieces.

So where do we go from here? We shall see! Blog stories may get a little more random! We have no laptop at the moment so they are sparse by necessity. I think my folksy shop may get an overhaul and turn into some kind of Margolily glory hole!

Till then…I hope everyone had a gorgeous, happy Christmas time (no matter how long ago it seems!) and here we go for a fabulous, wish filled 2012!

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Margolily is immersed in the world of looking after her brand new, tiny and beautiful daughter so posts, blogs, facebooks and sewing are a little neglected for now! Here is a lazy wee peek at some new pieces especially designed and posted to Glasgow’s super fantastic Shop of Interest before the arrival of my precious bundle!

Stars, origami, fabric fancies, vintage brooches, emerald twists and lucky Shop of Interest!

margolily in teal and butterflies

Gorgeously happy photos from beautiful Lesley on her wedding day last year.

We worked on the design together at Kakao by K in Edinburgh to create a stylish and unique headpiece to work with Lesley’s stunning butterfly print dress.

Lesley has given valuable advice in perfecting headpieces with netting and veiling and had this to say about Margolily too…

“My experience of Margolily was exciting, interactive and thoroughly recommended. The design consultation was relaxed and creative, you listened to my thoughts and changed some of them to make it all work better. I was totally confident that you knew what you were talking about. I loved wearing my headpiece and my wedding guests were gushing over it!!  My piece will be cherished forever!”

margolily jimmy hats

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

It has been a wild few weeks of stitching for summer weddings but as the Edinburgh festival gets under way here is a wee glimpse of the margolily tartan and tweed collection headed for the fabulous Fabhatrix in the Grassmarket.

Margolily headpieces are more stylish than a Jimmy Hat afterall!

margolily goes to hollywood

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Margolily is in love again! This time with a photo! Timi is a Hungarian photographer living and studying in Edinburgh,  she popped into Kakao by K to borrow some margolily headpieces for a photo shoot and just look what the girl did! The story behind this piece comes from my drawing around a vintage hat in Dundee’s Mcmanus Galleries with milliner Jeanette Sendler. This then became the pattern for the blocked and glamorous bow shaped headpiece, the gold flecked fabric was an upcycled frock, a dalliance of netting for intrigue and much bad tempered trial and error created the luxurious gold lining! Makes me think of Hollywood screen sirens and 1940′s beauties! Thanks to Timi for her beautiful photographs xx

margolily plays shops

Monday, November 15th, 2010

Maybe working in the Sentry Box toy shop all those years ago or once upon a time trying to sell my wee brother pegs, or perhaps many Blue Peter Bring and Buy Sales set the scene for a margolily gal to like playing at shops! For this week truly has been a Mary Portas style shopping extravaganza! Headed though to Edinburgh to visit lovely Karina at Kakao by K. Alongside luxurious and exclusive clothing in Kakao you will find classic, Chanel inspired, vintage glamour margolily headpieces. At the moment Kakao are also stocking a real Hollywood starlet treat, black and gold flecked bow and netting headpiece, beautiful! Stopped off at Fabhatrix in the Grass Market, where amongst a treasure trove of hats and headpieces you will find margolily’s tartan and Scottish inspired pieces. In Glasgow margolily pops up at markets such as Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair, Supermercado at the Barras and Sloans. At the markets you get the perfect chance to have a gab with me as well as try on headpieces in every colour. Pieces available at the markets usually have a magpie treasure inspiration using lots of vintage brooches and jewellery in their designs. If you can make it margolily will be at Sloans this very Saturday 20th November 11-5pm

Brides and wedding guests find margolily in all kinds of places from wedding shows to magazines, from dress designers to friends. Wedding pieces are often made using remnants from bespoke dresses, pearls and sparkle. Margolily will happily attend hair trials and dress fittings to make what you want exactly yours.

Of course your margolily headpiece may come straight from your which case margolily will work with you to create something stunning! Check out the gallery too!

Ooh and you can find me on Folksy too for all manner of treats in any style you wish!
